BOXING legend Les Darcy's grave will be restored.

Maitland City Council decided last night to have a conservation engineer prepare an assessment for the stabilisation and restoration of the gravesite in East Maitland Catholic Cemetery.

Council heritage officer Clare James said Darcy's gravesite had generated considerable public interest with a number of family descendants, individuals and community groups expressing strong support for its restoration.

The council will establish a $5000 fund for the restoration from its cemetery budget.

A memorial at East Maitland's historic Glebe Cemetery will be erected for architect Francis Greenway who is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave.

Ms James said many authors had speculated on Greenway's place of burial but no location had been confirmed.
