RESTORATION work has begun to repair the damage last year's June long weekend floods caused to the river bank at Maitland.

The Department of Environment and Climate Change has engaged the Department of Commerce to manage the project.

It involves some dredging and is focused on a crucial flood mitigation levee that helps to protect Maitland's central business district.

A Department of Commerce spokesman said the river bank would be restored to its pre-2007 flood condition.

The work is expected to continue for 16 weeks, subject to weather.
